I lost my Mum to cancer when I was 12, and at 18, got into a violent relationship with a drug addict. I didn’t do drugs myself but I did start to drink alcohol.
My son’s violent father put us both in the hospital when my son was just 4 weeks old. As a result, I found myself living alone with my son, alienated from friends and family. I began to drink more, and more, and more!
I was an alcoholic for 16 years. I drank through my son’s entire childhood. My son was 16 when I went through detox. I was classified as a functioning alcoholic…only drinking after 7pm.
During my detox period, my counsellors came to the conclusion that my drinking was a result of one, my Mum dying when I was young and two, my relationship with a violent partner. With the help of counseling intervention I got sober and changed my life around.
My phoenix tattoo represents me rising from the ashes of my alcoholic life!
I changed my name back from Corrie, as I was known whilst drinking, to Corrina (which I used to hate, but wasn’t associated with my drinking). I now have a great relationship with my son, been sober for over 7 years and I have a wonderful relationship with my partner of 5.5 years.
I am now trying to live life to the full.
